Universally
hailed as "America's Sweetheart" and cited by Vanity Fair as
"poised to challenge Julia Roberts as Hollywood's biggest box
office brunette", Sandra Bullock certainly keeps as busy as her
unofficial rival. Each actress has turned out three theatrical features
in little more than a year. Both are filming separate projects slated
for release before the holidays.
Following the success of Forces of Nature and Gun Shy, Sandra's latest effort, 28 Days may confound fans accustomed to her "Girl Next-door" image. Sandra is free to pursue such bold detour from typecast thanks to the enormous clout she currently enjoys within the movie industry. Among her many acting laurels, she has twice won the People's Choice Award® for "Favorite Motion Picture Actress". In 1999, she was chosen as one of "The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World" for People Weekly. Recently she established her own production company, Fortis Films. Born in Arlington, Virginia, the actress, who turned 36 on July 26, can credit her status to her years of hard work and hurried determination. The daughter of an American voice coach, John Bullock, and a German opera singer, Helga Meyer, Sandra was first bitten by the acting bug when, from the wings, she observed her mother's performances in the opera houses of Europe. Her early grasp of personal destiny led Sandra to leave East Carolina University, where she majored in Drama, to migrate to New York City, where she honed her skills in the Neighborhood Playhouse under the tutelage of famed teacher, Sanford Meisner. Her performance in the off-Broadway play, No Time Flat, earned a favorable nod from theater critic, John Simon, opening the door to movies and TV. Sandra's big break came when the same cheerful ebullience which won her the title of "Class Clown" in Arlington's Washington-Lee High School 1982 Yearbook, won her the faith of director, Jan de Bont, who fought the studio heads to cast her in his action flick, Speed. On those rare occasions when she slows down, Sandra relaxes in her home in Austin, Texas. |
